Mare Monstrum  Drown In My Magic

2016 - ongoing.

Mare Monstrum — Drown in my Magic opens up a fantastical Black ecology, repurposing modern and historical links between Blackness and water. As a series of digitally reconfigured photographs, Mare Monstrum — Drown in my Magic shows Black merpeople between shores and depths of the ocean. Hybrid characters brand fishlike fins and tails, their flesh morphs into bodies of water.  Water acts as expanse of belonging, safety, and autonomy. The series decentralizes the exclusionary idea of the human, its characters find freedom in the monstrous.
